Private Rolf Jones was born in Preston and was a nurseryman and florist in Tunstall (now known as Nunawading). He was 22 years old when he enlisted on 15 July 1915 and embarked for Europe on 11 October that year.
He was wounded in action in France at the battle of Fromelles on 19 July 1916 and was evacuated to England on 21 July 1916 where he was admitted to Western General Hospital in Manchester. He was transferred to the Cambridge Military Hospital in Aldershot on 7 October 1916 where he died from meningitis on 19 February 1917.
He was buried in the military cemetery at Aldershot and on 5 April 1917 his remains were exhumed and reinterred in Brokenwood Military Cemetery in Surrey.
